WORKING AT THE FACTUARY

We bring an objective, sales-driven view to strategy, creating stories that link brands to customers.

Set-up in 2015 by Dan Bleakman, The Factuary is a WPP AUNZ company.

THE FACTUARY PHILOSOPHY

Most businesses have a traditional top-down hierarchical approach to running their operations.

We don’t believe in traditional hierarchy. We feel that traditional hierarchical management stifles creativity and creates unnecessary process and layers. We‘ve flipped the model around. We believe in putting our partners and people first.

At the heart of learning and great ideas are our people and partners. They call the day to day shots and make the decisions that get brilliantresults and maintain our mantra of being trusted by brands to help them tell their story.

They’re supported by function heads who offers experience, guidance and coaching. Support and vision is pushed up and through the company for people to run with and own themselves. Great ideas and learning is then cascaded down by our specialists so that we’re all continually learning.

This guiding philosophy only works when the following three things remain central to our business:

#1 WE HIRE SPECIALISTS

Traditional agencies expect you to be a jack of all trades. We want to focus on people’s strengths and the value they can bring to our business.

We remove hierarchy and banish traditional and meaningless job titles. People want skills: Consumer Influencer Specialists, Broadcast Producers, Editorial Dynamos, Tech Geeks, Facebook fact-finders, Windows Wizards, Idea Generators.

#2 COACHING AND SUPPORT

We don’t manage our people, they take control of their own careers. We’re here to coach and guide them. We utilise their skills and offer them fulfillment through applying their knowledge and experience to help solve partner problems.

Career fulfillment and ambition is all about where our people want to take their job. We offer direction and guidance but place the onus on the individual to outline their hopes, dreams and aspirations.

#3 TRUST & THINK

“Freethinkers are those who are willing to use their minds without prejudice and without fearing to understand things that clash with their own customs, privileges or beliefs. This state of mind is not common but it is essential for right thinking; where it is absent, discussion is apt to become worse than useless.” (Tolstoy)

There’s often very little time we allow ourselves to actually stop and think about what we do in our jobs. Working in such a fast-paced environment means that it can feel like we’re ticking boxes most of the time and shoving stuff out the door. How many businesses actually allow their people time to ‘think’? At The Factuary we have a time code for ‘Thinking’.

We believe in keeping things as simple as possible, if we do our people will flourish. We trust that our people will do a great job, do it on time and to a great standard. How they get there is up to them. The more barriers and rules we create, the more people will try to jump over or through them and thus we lose ‘trust’. Barriers don’t foster a culture of free-thinkers and trust. We need free-thinkers to survive and grow.

We trust our people to get the job done. .

A Factuary worker

So what makes a Factuary ‘worker’? There are seven qualities that we look for in the people:

  1. They must have Credibility – Without it, we’re nothing.
  2. We need to be Curious – Don’t look for the path of least resistance.
  3. Central to what we do is Creativity – It’s the perfect blend of art & science.
  4. We all have to Cooperate – It’s critical that we all work in harmony with one another and for one another. No job is too big or too small for anyone in the business to do.
  5. Be Courageous – Factuary ‘workers’ aren’t afraid to fail, but they do it fast and learn from it.
  6. We’re Consultative – Our partners trust that what we do is right
  7. We’re Committed – To the task ahead and to see it through to the end. We don’t give up.
